Steven Markowitz, most known as the stage name Hoodie Allen, is a 29 year old American rapper from Long Island, New York who started to pursue his music career in 2011 with his adaption of Marina and the Diamonds’ song ‘I Am Not A Robot’ which was named ‘You Are Not A Robot’. His first official single from his EP ‘All American’ was named ‘No Interruption’. Since then he has released various albums, EPs and singles with his latest album being ‘The Hype’.
The concert took place on Saturday 16th December at the O₂ Institute, Birmingham. This was the penultimate show of the tour having been around North America and Europe as well. The arena itself was one that was smaller than I was used to; however, the atmosphere that was created was electrifying. Initially, the support artist Goody Grace came on and sang 4 of his songs. Having not heard his music before (apart from his feature in one of Hoodie’s songs) I was unable to fully enjoy this to the capacity that I could have done. Despite being a newcomer to the music industry and my lack of knowledge of his songs, I enjoyed his 20 minute set.
After Goody Grace, Hoodie came on with his band. This band consisted of drums, backing singer, electric guitars and keyboard. Hoodie started his set with his song Believe (from his latest album) as the introduction which was immediately followed by Sushi (also from his latest album) which made the atmosphere of the whole arena lift as he interacted with the audience. This interaction continued throughout which definitely maintained the great mood.
As the concert continued, Hoodie sang happy birthday to someone in the audience, in one of the songs he allowed one of the audience members to rap to ‘You Are Not A Robot’ (his first ever release) and during his song ‘Cake Boy’ threw two cakes, made by some of the audience, into the crowd (this is what he does at every show).
The songs that were on the set list were:
Believe, Sushi, Are U Having Any Fun?, Eighteen Cool, Something Dangerous, Act My Age, Small Town, Surprise Party, Cake Boy, Two Lips, James Franco, Champagne and Pools, Fame Is For A**holes, Know It All, No Faith In Brooklyn, All About It, Ain’t Ready, All My Friends, No Interruption and Heartbreak (which was also performed with Goody Grace).
At the end of the show Hoodie and his band mates ended up throwing water from their water bottles over the audience in standing which was a surprise but also a very funny way to end the 2 hour show.
Overall, this concert was one of the best concerts I have been to, due to the all-round atmosphere, mood and energy from everyone; however, next time I would like to be in standing as sitting on the balcony felt like I was disconnected from the main show as I was of the only people in the balcony dancing and singing.
